It took her two hours to tell her story. A depressing tale of a harsh father, low self-esteem and a manipulative older man.

‘When I interviewed him, he said he had to have you, that you held out for a ring.’

Karen nibbled at her nails. ‘I was a virgin. I had been brought up in a really strict way. I wasn’t after marriage, but he was so persuasive and yes, I suppose he could be romantic. He completely took me in. He was my tutor at college. He taught psychology on a part-time basis. He’d just started the consultancy and he needed a back-up in case it didn’t take off. Turned out he was screwing half the tutorial group.’ She shook her head.

‘How do you know?’

‘By the time we got back together, the consultancy was successful. He was always off on trips abroad. He was away in Singapore and I found his diaries. They catalogued every woman he’d slept with, gave them a mark out of ten.’ She gulped her wine. ‘I thought I was in love, I thought he loved me, but his “affairs”, if you can call them that, had gone on all the time we were together. I was devastated when I found out what he’d been up to. Christ, I can’t believe I was so naïve. I phoned up Debbie and we went out. I’m so ashamed of what I did. I picked up a complete stranger and slept with him. I didn’t know his name. That’s why I didn’t tell you any of this. It’s so damn sordid.’

‘And that is Sophie’s father?’

She nodded; a tear rolled down her cheek. ‘John came back from Singapore. I felt nauseous all the time. At first I thought it was psychological then I realised. I was terrified he’d find out. And of course he did. I left immediately, and not long after that I met you.’ She smiled. ‘I couldn’t believe my luck. But I didn’t dare tell you in case you left me too.’

‘Oh, Karen. Do you think I’m that lacking in compassion?’

She gave him a watery smile. ‘I know better now, but at the time… and now I’ve probably lost you. Can you forgive me?’

It wasn’t the time to hesitate so Mark answered immediately, ‘Yes.’ He had to forgive her, for the sake of his children.
